A special program commemorating the first anniversary of 9/11 will be held at Beverly High School on that date at 8:30 A.M. The Key Club, sponsored by the Beverly Kiwanis, is working with Principal William Foye on the program.
According to William Coughlin, Kiwanis Youth Coordinator, the keynote speaker will be Captain Barbara George, of the Lynn Salvation Army, who was part of the rescue mission and was featured on local television news programs. Ms. George was also honored by a national award for her service. The theme for the program will be to honor the emergency service providers as we remember 9/11. Special recognition will be given to the firefighters, police, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and veteran organizations. Student speakers will be chosen to offer their comments and remembrances of 9/11. In addition, American flag decals will be given out after school on the day before the program to students to display on automobiles. The Beverly High School band, chorus and Marine Corps ROTC unit will be actively featured in the program. Color guards from the ROTC, police, fire and veterans organizations will be in attendance. Bells will ring at the high school at approximately 8:45 AM, 9:03 AM, 9:43 AM and 10:00 AM. Each ring commemorates the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, United Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a field about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. “This ceremony will help us to remember the sacrifices of those who died on September 11. We must also remember those who continue to give of themselves daily while fighting for our freedom.” American Legion. Mayor Thomas Crean will speak for the city and offer his words on this commemoration. Also, noted musician and singer John Archer, will again lead with the Star Spangled Banner. The program will be held in the field house. Signs denoting parking areas will be posted at the entrances to the school. A special area of the field house will be reserved for the general public. All are invited to attend. The program will commence at exactly 8:30 AM in order to coordinate with the bells ringing throughout the city.
